Today I had a particularly bad day so I was thinking about society and its unrealistic expectations to be beautiful. I’m not an artsy creative person at all obviously but I felt like I needed to do this little project for myself. This poster was done entirely out of make-up, specifically eyeliner and mascara and eyeshadow and lipstick. The two eyes in the center are made of hair-ties to show another aspect of beauty and also how we too often tie up our problems and true selves. I created a bunch of eyes to depict how beauty is in the eye of the beholder but that it shouldn’t be, because beauty is not something we should strive for or work endlessly to achieve. Every single day, people quite literally cover themselves up with make-up in order to attain an image of “beauty” because society considers it a success to be beautiful. It’s scary, honestly. I shouldn’t feel terrible about myself when I don’t wear make-up, but I do, and that probably won’t change, but it’s important to me to recognize the ridiculous notions we make every day that drive us to change ourselves in order to fit a certain image. We see too much sometimes and it can ruin us. We should not fear what we look at in the mirror or what we see on other people because we all are different and that’s essential. Individualization is crucial to society and it is what will change society and the way we all view ourselves.
This is what I call The BEAUTeye Project, being able to see beyond the expectations enough to identify what is honest and real about all of us.
shoutout to all the other ex-gifted & talented/honor student/straight a/senior editor/star student/99th percentile/once-creative burn-outs who have, since high school, realized they are truly miniscule fish in a giant, endless ocean, criticized themselves to the point of creative paralysis, and participated in so much self-sabotage they no longer see the point of doing anything at all because they’re just going to ruin it for themselves anyway
:)
